HSPVA Creative Writing Handbook 2017-2018

STUDIO TIME GUIDELINES

The purpose of Studio Time is to give students the opportunity to work on their writing and other art
area projects during school hours, when they are not tired after a full day of school. We too frequently
see students abuse this privilege. We will continue to include Studio Time in our curriculum for as long
as we see students using it appropriately; we will reconsider its value if we find ourselves consistently
having to redirect students who are off task. Make good choices. If nothing else, grab a book and read,
as nothing will make you a better writer than being a good reader.

Students will work in the Library Classroom or C-11. Students may work in additional spaces upon permission of the instructor.

STUDENTS MAY:
·         work on any creative writing assignment
·         write in their journals
·         read anything (so long as it is not homework for an academic class)
·         use a computer to learn more about a particular software for the production of their work (this includes but is not limited to the Adobe Suite and Final Cut)
·         practice bookbinding
·         letterpress (with faculty permission)
·         listen to music with headphones
·         Sit two to a table in the library, with permission. Students' computer screens should face the front of the library.

STUDENTS MAY NOT:
·         work on assignments for academic classes
·         sleep
·         watch you tube or any other movies/TV etc
·         talk excessively to other students
·         use their phone without permission from faculty

GRADES

Students will receive the following grades for Studio Time:
·         Weekly P and P (based on the behaviors listed above as well as standard P and P outlined in your
handbook). Five points will deducted from this weekly grade for each of the following: academic work, sleeping, off task, not informing instructor where you are.
