HSPVA Creative Writing Handbook 2017-2018
CREATIVE WRITING DEPARTMENT SENIOR SHOW REQUIREMENTS
The privilege of having a Creative Writing Department senior show is expected to be earned by each student in the creative writing department. Participation in the senior show is required in order to maintain eligibility for “Art Department Certification". The following are the requirements to have a Creative Writing Department sanctioned “Senior Show”. Students, please initial each statement as you read them.
Each Prospective Senior Show Recipient will:
If a student loses their Senior Show Privilege because of grades, it is sometimes possible to re-earn it. The student will consult with the Creative Writing Department Faculty to determine what is needed. Certification cannot be re-earned.
Each Student Awarded a Senior Exhibition will:
Submit a FINAL updated Artist Statement or Manifesto at least one week prior to his/her scheduled show. Each statement will be approved by the faculty and revised by the student as needed. The “approved version” will be displayed as part of each student’s Senior Show.
Prepare and facilitate their own publicity within the following parameters:
· Must be appropriate for general audience viewing.
· Must be approved by the department chair and an Assistant Principal before it can be posted.
· Must be 2-dimensional and no larger than 8.5” x 14”.
Hung on approved bulletin boards, no tape, staples or pins on painted surfaces, as specified in school guidelines
Create a presentation of work that runs between 8-15 minutes in length.. This presentation may include but is not limited to: an introduction to the work as a whole or individual pieces, introduction of show members, a reading of the student’s own work, a staged reading of a script, a screening of short films, a multi-media presentation. All aspects of the presentation must be approved by the faculty committee. All work to be considered for the senior show must be completed by November 17, 2016. Any exceptions must be approved by creative writing faculty.
Have his/her show evaluated by a faculty committee. This evaluation will be reflected as the student’s final exam grade for the Spring Semester. A grade of less than 80 will result in the loss of Art Area Certification.
Restore the performance area to the state in which they found it- put away chairs, tables, equipment as needed, clean the area so that it is ready for class the next day.
Be in attendance the day preceding the show, the day of the show, and the day following the show. If you are absent the day before a show, you may lose your senior show privilege. If you are absent the day after a show, your final grade may be penalized.
Submit to the department two weeks prior to the show a copy of all work that is to be read or presented during the Senior Show, including but not limited to: printed copies of work to be read, chapbooks, and videos. Work that is not completed by this time cannot be considered.
Plan ahead and work with creative writing faculty to secure time in the Recital Hall for rehearsals.
Ensure that technology and other relevant materials are installed and work properly if a team is creating a multi-media show.
Please be advised of the following:
All components of your show must be defined clearly and in detail in your Senior Show Proposal and must relate to your Artist Statement for approval.
Students may show video as part of their exhibition under the following conditions. All video must be approved two weeks before your show.
Students are responsible for testing each technological component at least one week prior to the show in the performance space.
There can be no food served in the performance spaces before, during, or after senior shows.
Failure to meet any or all of these requirements may result in a “failing” senior show (final exam) grade, and/or the loss of "Art Department Certification".
Students will be graded on these expectations and will be a major component for the senior students’ final exam grade.
If students have any questions about any of these requirements, they should make an appointment to speak with a member of the creative writing department as soon as questions arise.
