OPPORTUNITIES

There are many opportunities for students to apply to internships or writing programs or to enter their work in various competitions for almost any genre or medium. While we can't list every competition, we will list some of the big ones for students to consider.

Houston Youth Poet Laureate

What it is: "The Houston Youth Poet Laureate program aims to identify young writers and leaders who are committed to civic and community engagement, poetry and performance, human relations, diversity, and education across Houston. Youth voice and community engagement are vital for empowering young people to effect positive change. The Houston Youth Poet Laureate will have numerous opportunities and platforms to share their powerful voices, their leadership, and love of Houston."

What it is: "YoungArts discovers the next generation of visual, literary and performing artists and contributes to the cultural vitality of the nation by nurturing their talent."

Texas Commision on the Arts 
Young Masters Program

What it is: "This program awards grants to talented young artists to further their studies in their chosen field. This grant is not a college scholarship. The most talented young artists will receive the title of Young Master and will be awarded grants of $5,000 per year to further their studies in their chosen arts disciplines. Students are to receive the grant for up to two years, but they must submit a plan for study annually."

SXSW film festival: Texas High School

What it is: "To support and cultivate the next generation of filmmakers, SXSW Film hosts a special competition for students enrolled in Texas high schools."

John f. Kennedy Presidential Library
Profile in Courage

What it is: "The John F. Kennedy Library Foundation invites US high school students to write an essay on an act of political courage by a US elected official who served during or after 1956."

Mildred's Umbrella: museum of dysfunction

What it is: "Mildred's Umbrella Theater Company is accepting submissions for our Museum of Dysfunction Annual Short Play Festival. For the 9th annual festival in 2017, 10 of the 20 submissions will only be accepted from high school and college students. Plays will be produced by the professional actors/directors of Mildred's Umbrella Theater Company."

Spark a story

What it is: "We’re on the lookout for the nation’s next generation of great short story writers. Who and where are the best young American storytellers? The Spark a Story contest will invite high school students to submit original short fiction to us at HMH that will be winnowed down to the twenty strongest stories. Those winning writers will have their stories published in a special anthology by our trade division next year."
